A DAY AT LLP
SUMMER FUN
BRIEF HISTORY
Classrooms are arranged in "learning centers." The goal is to allow each child to develop at his or her own pace. The teacher provides engaging, age-appropriate activities to challenge the children. The children can choose the centers that interest them. The day is set up with both teacher-directed and child-directed activities. Center materials are frequently rotated to provide new and ever-changing experiences. In a typical day, children will be exposed to:
Art
This is an opportunity to explore open-ended projects by using different materials and textures. This center allows the children to pursue creative thinking. Some materials found here are clay, markers, paint, crayons, scissors, buttons, cotton balls, tissue paper, glue, wallpaper, foil and more. Supplies are rotated weekly.
Dramatic Play Center
This center allows children to be creative and act out different situations. The children enjoy role-playing and using various props, including dishes, hats, purses, kitchen furniture, stuffed animals, doctor kits and play "stores." We change the props to allow for different experiences and varying themes, and we'd welcome any contributions from your work or home.
Blocks & Manipulative Center
This center helps the children to develop eye-hand coordination. The children's imaginations are stimulated by their different creations. The blocks may become a house, car or spaceship. Materials found in this center include: wooden blocks, cars, trucks and toy figures. To help develop their fine-motor skills, the children will work puzzles, string beads and use visual discrimination to sort by color, shape and size. Important math and analytical skills are developed in this center.
Circle Time
In this center we sing and dance. We do colors, numbers days of the week and alphabet. We do body movements to music, stretching exercises and group games. We make sure everyone feels important. The children learn how to follow directions and use their large-motor muscles.
Story/ Bible Time
Telling and listening to stories are important parts of every day. Reading aloud to children develops language and listening skills. Giving children opportunities to browse through books and create their own stories strengthens their cognitive skills. We encourage the children to predict what will happen next in a story and to repeat patterns in a book. We welcome books and volunteers to come in and read to the children.
Outside Time
We try to go outside every day. It is important for young bodies to run around and get plenty of exercise. Outside time allows for imaginative play – and we always provide props to increase the fun.
